This patent describes a well packer mechanically settable and retrievable within a wellbore using a running tool to selectively isolate the wellhead. It comprises an inner mandrel; a sleeve assembly moveably mounted to the inner mandrel the sleeve assembly selectively adjustable along the mandrel for longitudinal movement of the mandrel in a first direction relative to the sleeve assembly to set the packer; and locking ratchet means for selectively preventing longitudinal movement of the mandrel in a second direction relative to the sleeve assembly thereby preventing release of the packer, the locking ratchet means including a first ratchet nut movable to a preset position as the packer is run into the wellbore and a second ratchet nut the ratchet means being selectively disengageable to allow longitudinal movement of the mandrel in the second direction relative to the sleeve assembly to unset the packer for retrieval thereof; the sleeve assembly including at least one packing element selectively compressible into sealing engagement with the wellbore and at least one slip selectively engageable with the well bore to set the packer within the wellbore.
