Anomalous transverse electron diffusion in strong magnetic fields caused by electric field fluctuations
The Kubo formula is used to provide an initial expression for D/sub x/x. A correlation function for the electric field is introduced in the self-consistent field approximation. The Dreizin-Dykhne law D/sub x//sub x/ = 1.2((..pi../6)(c/sup 2//H/sup 2/) (k/sub B/T/q)/sup 2/<(deltan/n)>1/D/sup 1/2//sub z/z)/sup 2/3/ is derived for the case of fields produced by density irregularities in semiconductors (the constant 2 is valid for a Gaussian correlation function). An expression is derived for the anomalous electron diffusion coefficient (heat conductivity) associated with plasma turbulence in tokamaks. For particles drifting through the system, D/sub perpendicular/approx.H/sup -2/, while for trapped particles the equation D/sub perpendicular/approx.(c/H)h/sub B/Te/q(<(deltan/n)/sup 2/>)/sup 1/2/ (Bohm diffusion) is derived. If available measurements of the change deltan/n are used, the values calculated for tau/sub E/e are found to have the same order of magnitude as the experimental results.
