Rayong serves Thailand's fast growing industrial power demand

Journal Article · · Turbomachinery International; (United States)

With the first of three 300 MW combined cycle blocks nearing completion and work starting on gas turbine installation for a fourth, EGAT's Rayong power plant is an important development in power supply to a fast growing region of industry and tourism along the south coast. This article examines the staged construction plans for these plants. Rapid economic development in the late '80s has put severe pressure on the electricity supply system in Thailand. Much of this growth is concentrated in the region around Bangkok and south along the Gulf coast. Rayong, 125 km south of the capital and about 30 km east of the resort city of Pattaya, is a major center of light industrial development, and close to the shore terminal for the gas fields in the Gulf of Thailand.
