Ohio makes awards to 24 clean coal projects
On September 15, 1986 the Ohio Coal Development Office announced that it had awarded $41.6 million to 8 clean coal demonstration projects and 16 research projects in Ohio. These projects are listed in a table. The demonstration project include: pressurized fluidized bed combustion combined cycle retrofit of the Tidd Station; tests of limestone injection multi-stage burner (LIMB) technology plus sorbent duct injection at the Edgewater Station; post-combustion sulfur dioxide control project at the Toronto Station; determination of the applicability of spray-dry scrubbing of high-sulfur coal fuel gas; catalytic reduction process for coal fuel gas; integrated gasification combined cycle using steam-injected gas turbine and hot gas cleanup; coal/oil coprocessing using HRI technology; and industrial application of steam and electricity coproduction. The research projects involve: swelling technology for deep cleaning of coal; selective oxidation desulfurization process; microbial desulfurization process for clean coal fines; characterization of Ohio's coal resource by seam and washability tests on each type of Ohio coal; clean coal fuels management; sulfur reduction by physical cleaning and in-flame sulfur absorption; combined chemical and physical coal cleaning process; sulfur extraction, separation by supercritical fluids; microbial clean coal processing; limestone emission control system; sulfur extraction by supercritical fluids; sulfur dioxide removal through a circulating fluidized bed absorber; hollow fiber membrane desulfurization; sulfur dioxide removal through calcium/ammonia spray dryer; organo-metallic complex process for sulfur and nitrogen oxide removal; and ion exchange resin/fixed bed desulfurization.
