Lanthanide-containing zirconotitanate solid solutions

Solid solutions between several lanthanide-containing dititanate and dizirconate compounds have been synthesized and identified using X-ray diffraction (XRD). Complete solubility was found in the pyrochlore-pyrochlore-type systems Er{sub 2}Ti{sub 2}O{sub 7}-Nd{sub 2}Zr{sub 2}O{sub 7} and Nd{sub 1.2}Er{sub 0.8}Ti{sub 2}O{sub 7}-Nd{sub 2}Zr{sub 2}O{sub 7}. Some solubility of Nd{sub 2}Ti{sub 2}O{sub 7}, a monoclinic dititanate, in defect fluorite Er{sub 2}Zr{sub 2}O{sub 7} was observed, and it was determined that there is some solubility of Nd{sub 2}Ti{sub 2}O{sub 7} in pyrochlore-type Nd{sub 2}Zr{sub 2}O{sub 7}. The systems Nd{sub 2}Zr{sub 2}O{sub 7}-TiO{sub 2} and Nd{sub 2}Ti{sub 2}O{sub 7}-ZrO{sub 2} also were investigated to help define a region of pyrochlore solid solution formation in the system NdO{sub 1.5}-TiO{sub 2}-ZrO{sub 2}. Additionally, attempts were made to synthesize pyrochlore-type solid solutions between Ce{sub 2}Ti{sub 2}O{sub 7} and Ce{sub 2}Zr{sub 2}O{sub 7} and to substitute titanium with zirconium in the perovskite-type phases SrNd{sub 2}Ti{sub 4}O{sub 12} and Sr{sub 2}Ce{sub 2}Ti{sub 5}O{sub 16}.
