Exxon ready with novel gas conversion technology
After nearly a decade of work and $150 million in development costs. Exxon Research and Engineering (ER&E; Florham Park, NJ) says its natural gas conversion process based on Fischer-Tropsch technology is ready for full-scale commercialization. ER&E is looking to entice one of Exxon`s other business units into building a plant based on the process. The Exxon technology makes refinery or petrochemical feedstocks from natural gas in an integrated three-step process, including fluid-bed reactor to make synthesis gas and a hydrocarbon synthesis step using a proprietary Fischer-Tropsch catalyst. Exxon has successfully demonstrated the process at a pilot plant in Baton Rouge, LA but says no commercialization decision has been made. ER&E estimates that to commercialize the technology economically will require a large gas conversion plant-with a price tag of about $2 billion.
