The engineered safety systems of nuclear power plants are normally inactive. To ensure their operability, they are tested and, if needed, repaired at periodic intervals (usually once every month). The quantity of interest in such situations is the system unavailability. The purpose of this paper is to develop simple analytical expressions for the average unavailability of periodically tested redundant systems. 15 refs.
