The paper presents a two-dimensional model for melting (or solidification) of a phase-changing material (PCM) surrounding a pipe. A fluid flowing in the pipe is used as a carrier of heat from a distant source. A multitude of such pipes with a suitable PCM around them can serve as a heat storage unit for solar or other applications. The present model takes into consideration temperature variations in two dimensions. 9 refs.
