Experiments demonstrating the Hall effect by Nobel Laureate Klaus von Klitzing have clarified what happens when electrons passing through a magnetic field are deflected. The effect occurs both with cyclotron rotation and in the ionosphere. The experiment showed that the Hall effect occurs in a series of quantum jumps instead of a smooth transition. A review of previous work and description of the experiment concludes with an analysis of its significance to the field of quantum physics in clarifying the fine structure constant. 5 figures.
