This paper theoretically considers the propagation of a ''self-transparent'' pulse in ruby at the frequency of the R/sub 1/ line in the presence of degeneracy of the transitions. Calculates the transmission of a ruby sample 12 cm long and shows that it can be quite high, 0.7, differing greatly from the transmission in a model in which degenerate transitions are regarded as independent. Concludes that the results offer evidence that allowance for the coupling of degenerate system is essential under self-transparency conditions.
