This article describes a program that was initiated by the Department of Defense in the late fiscal year 1979 to develop the technology required for using alternative and synthetic fuels. The U.S. Army was assigned the lead role for alcohol fuels and has since initiated a comprehensive two-year effort to determine the suitability for using gasohol in all gasoline-consuming military tactical equipment. The three phases of the U.S. Army's Gasohol Evaluation Program are described.
