University's role is education, not programming

There is a shortage of skilled programmers and programmer analysts but not all companies will hire new graduates. Does this mean that university computer courses should become more programming orientated. The importance of avoiding narrow specialisation in such a rapidly changing field is stressed. The most important arena in which universities can help avert Japanese dominance is in the field of artificial intelligence and expert systems.
