Exxon gearing up for Hondo expansion

Plans are underway to continue the Hondo field development by adding a second platform, and to move ahead with the exploitation of two other fields in the Santa Ynez Unit (SYU). These fields, Pescado and Sacate, were discovered shortly after Hondo (1969), but are just now being fully delineated and developed. The SYU expansion plan calls for up to four additional platforms and more than doubling the area's current producing rate of approximately 40,000 batd of oil and more than 26 MMscfd of gas. Exxon is moving ahead with expansion plans in face of a need for 40 permits from 27 different agencies before it can implement the project. The 92,000-acre SYU, which Exxon Co. USA operates, is the largest OCS unit ever formed with reserves pegged at about 400 million bbl of oil. Exxon owns majority interest in the unit with smaller interests held by Chevron USA and Shell. The major reservoir is the unique Monterey chert, a highly fractured, dense rock of Miocene age with little matrix permeability. It ranges in thickness from 1,500 to 3,000 ft, and is a prime target of offshore explorationists.
