The first and second derivatives of the current-voltage characteristics of a V--oxide--Au tunneling junction are investigated. It is shown that the observable singularities in the experimental tunneling density of states N (eV) are a reflection of the electron-phonon interaction. The results obtained are compared with the tunneling data on Nb and Ta, and it is found that the values for V, Nb, and Ta of the product M..omega../sup 2/ (M is the mass of the atom and ..omega.. denotes the energy coordinates of the singularities in the N (eV) curve) corresponding to the phonon factor M<..omega../sup 2/>, which determines the electron--phonon interaction constant lambda, coincide to within a few percent.
