The present paper deals primarily with finite transverse dimension effects and efficiency enhancement methods in a steady state FEL amplifier configuration. In particular, a comprehensive formalism is used to study finite transverse dimension effects associated with (1) the wiggler field, (2) the electron beam and (3) the total radiation beam. The formulation includes efficiency enhancement schemes such as spatially contouring the wiggler field as well as accelerating the electron beam. The relationship between these various enhancement schemes is discussed. Finally, a finite transverse dimension illustrative example of a 10.6 micron FEL with enhanced efficiency is given.
