An apparatus is described for delivering fuel for combustion, comprising: a first hopper for containing a quantity of the fuel; a second hopper disposed below the first hopper; displacing means for causing a predetermined volume of fuel to drop from the first hopper into the second hopper; and upwardly extending slat-type conveyor means at least partially disposed within the second hopper for removing fuel from the second hopper for combustion and having an upper portion; the conveyor means having a closed course of cleats, a portion of the closed course facing interiorly into the second hopper for contacting the fuel therein. The second hopper and the upper portion of the conveyor defines a substantial unrestricted space extending substantially the entire length of the upper portion; the conveyor means being sufficiently inclined and operable at a speed to promote back tumbling of the fuel from the cleats into the unrestricted space, thereby serving to decompact the fuel before it is delivered for combustion.
