We report on the utility of several tetraphenylporphyrin- (TPP-) silica stationary phases (metalated and unmetalated) for C[sub 60]/C[sub 70] separations and demonstrate that these supports provide the highest selectivity factor ([alpha]c[sub 70]/c[sub 60] [ge] 4) reported to date for this separation in 100% toluene. The relatively high solubility of fullerenes in toluene should make larger, better packed columns well-suited for preparative separations of these species, especially the purification of C[sub 60]. While the ability of the new porphyrin columns to separate higher fullerenes remains to be examined in detail, it is likely that similar improvements in resolution for these high molecular weight compounds may also be possible with the new porphyrin supports and/or addition of modifiers to the eluent. It appears that [pi]-[pi] interactions play a role in the preferential retention of C[sub 70] fullerene on the porphyrin-based columns. 17 refs., 3 figs., 1 tab.
