Title: Characteristics of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier pumped by a frequency doubled diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser

Abstract

Characteristics of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier pumped at 532 nm with a frequency doubled diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser are presented. A system gain of 31 dB and saturation power level of greater than 10 mW have been obtained, the highest reported so far using this pump source. The performance of the amplifier as an in-line repeater in a communication system has been evaluated over 260 km of step index single mode fiber.
