This paper discusses flow measurement by vortex shedding meters. Vortex flowmeters measure the flow of fluids in pipelines by monitoring induced vortices caused by the fluid impinging on a nonstreamlined body. Vortex meters have been available commercially from several manufacturers for a number of years. Acceptance was slow, but the paper emphasizes that the vortex meter offers benefits to and is receiving acceptance from a large number of users. The vortex meter offers considerable potential in place of the orifice plate and turbine meter.
