This article examines the problems and benefits of residential photovoltaic power supplies, planned, owned and installed by the utility and interconnected with the utility grid. The topics of the article include photovoltaic (PV)systems reduce peak load, rooftop placement for PV arrays, public and homeowners' reactions, customer ownership drawbacks, barriers to customer investment in PV, benefits of utility ownership, power conditioners and monitoring, and cooperation between the utility and residents.
