A production function for the juvenile stage of hybrid poplar Populus x euramericana clone 145/51, subject to coppice regeneration, was estimated using data from a site in Central Ontario. Age, density of stocking, and generation number was used as input factors to estimate biomass yields at ages of 1, 2, and 3 years. The function was utilized to determine the optimal stocking and the number of coppice harvests that would maximize the expected annual land rent for given planting costs, stumpage prices, and discount rates. The sensitivity of potential land rent to these variables was also examined. It was found that biomass production on a 2- to 3-year rotation system could be economical only if planting costs are reduced and/or value of yields increased substantially.
