Political risk in the international oil and gas industry

Book ·
OSTI ID:5060124
A review of Lax's book on the political risks inherent in natural gas and oil trade for governments and investors agrees with the author's definition of risk as unanticipated change in the business environment. With political risk management a new field which encompasses both art and science, a firm needs to select a strategy most appropriate it its own situation. The reviewer faults Lax for not providing insights into political risks that are unique to oil and gas ventures. The author also faults Lax's cynical perspective on the role of economics as a determinant of behavior in investment matters and his tone that oil companies and host governments, particularly in developing countries, are still locked into an adversarial relationship.
