Title: Carbon burn-out prepares flyash for concrete applications

Journal Article · · Electric Light and Power
OSTI ID:50600

The highest economic value for utilizing power plant fly-ash is as filler in concrete, according to the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). EPRI notes that growing expenses and liability concerns over solid-waste disposal are fueling the need for aggresive recycling of coal combustion products. Flyash can be utilized in concrete as a mineral admixture or as a partial replacement for cement. However, the carbon content in normal power plant flyash is a major contaminant that reduces the efficiency of chemicals that impart desired properties to the concrete. A Carbon Burn-Out (CBO) demonstration plant was constructed to develop techniques for producing high quality treated flyash. Concrete mix tests with the treated flyash produced stronger concrete, thus making CBO a viable treatment method.
