Performance of a fluidized bed calciner for the calcination of metal metal nitrate wastes

Journal Article · · Nucl. Chem. Waste Manage.; (United States)
The performance of a Fluidized Bed Calciner has been evaluated for calcination of simulated fission-product wastes and thorium nitrate solutions. A parametric study using fractional factorial design was employed to delineate the important operating variables. Mechanistic studies were carried out with thorium nitrate solutions doped with iron to determine the most probable dominant mechanism for the formation of elutriatable fine particles in the fluidized bed. Analysis of the experimental results shows spray generation, not bed attrition, to be the dominant mechanism.
