Novel macrocyclic carriers for proton-coupled liquid membrane transport. Progress report, 1 December 1985-31 July 1986

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5058681
The objective of our research program is to elucidate the chemical principles which are responsible for the cation selectivity and permeability of liquid membranes containing macrocyclic carriers. A number of new carriers were synthesized, based on the inclusion of pyridono, triazolo, sulfonamide, and phosphate groups in the principal macrocyclic ring. Many of these show excellent transport efficiency and selectivity in bulk membranes. The nature of ligand acidity and of cation binding were elucidated for the first two sets of carriers by NMR, x-ray crystallography, calorimetry, and pH titrimetry. Hydrophobic crown ethers were successfully incorporated into supported liquid membranes.
