The data on observations of photospheric faculae are briefly examined and the diffuculties which homogeneous models of an active region encounter in explaining the entire collection of observational data are indicated. The possibility is considered of constructing an inhomogeneous model of a facula according to which a filament consists of denser facular granules with photospheric material between them. If one assumes that facular granules are more opaque than the undisturbed photosphere, then the radiation of the hotter layers which shines through the transparent photosphere should escape from facular granules in lateral directions. For example, to explain the observed brightness excess of facular filaments in the continuous spectrum it is sufficient that the density in a facula be twice as great as in the photosphere at equal depths. This requires surface superheating of no more than 130 /sup 0/K. The observed line attenuation can be explained in the same way.
