Effect of waveguide parameters on CO/sub 2/ laser lasing characteristics

The effect of statistical surface roughness of a dielectric waveguide on the amount of loss in the transmission of radiation in the waveguide and on the magnitude of the running emission power in gas-discharge CO/sub 2/ waveguide lasers is estimated theoretically and studied experimentally. Permissible surface roughness parameters are determined, which are different for different waveguide wall materials. A CO/sub 2/ laser with leucosapphire waveguide, whose surface roughness parameters satisfy the formulated requirements is studied. A lasing power of 35W/m is achieved, which is the highest for waveguides made of aluminum oxide, and close to that achieved in beryllium oxide waveguides under comparable experimental conditions.
