Title: Crystalline morphology of the matrix of PEEK-carbon fiber aromatic polymer composites. II. Crystallization behavior

The crystallization behavior of the aromatic polymer composite APC-2 was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry under isothermal and constant cooling conditions. A model based on the Avrami kinetic equation is used to estimate the extrapolated crystallization behavior at very fast cooling rates. This shows that beyond about 700/sup 0/C/minute, the spherulitic growth will be unable to achieve completion and that cooling rates should therefore be kept below this figure if adequate crystallization is to occur during fabrication. If cooling rates faster than this are used then satisfactory crystallization can be achieved by annealing between 200 and 300/sup 0/C. 6 references, 4 figures.
