Automotive fuel system

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5053382
This patent describes an automotive fuel system. It comprises a fuel tank, a high pressure discharge pipe between the tank and an engine for conducting high pressure fuel to the engine, a low pressure return pipe between the tank and the engine for conducting low pressure fuel overage to the tank, a reservoir in the fuel tank including a partition dividing the reservoir into an upper chamber and a lower chamber, means connecting the return pipe directly to the lower chamber so that the fuel overage is confined to the lower chamber, a high pressure fuel pump in the reservoir having an inlet connected to the lower chamber and a discharge connected to the high pressure discharge pipe, a low pressure pump having an inlet open directly to the fuel tank and a discharge connected directly to the upper chamber, means connecting the upper chamber to the fuel tank so that overflow from the upper chamber is to the fuel tank, and a drain between the upper chamber and the lower chamber conducting gravity induced fuel flow from the upper chamber into the lower chamber.
