Slags and mattes from three secondary lead producers were studied as part of an effort to develop treatment methods for hazardous materials. The lead phases in these materials were of major interest. Lead was present in the slags mainly in the metallic form, while the mattes contained both metallic lead and synthetic galena. X-ray diffraction indicated that the predominate phase in the slags was CaFeSiO[sub 4], while the mattes contained primarily FeS and Fe[sub 3]O[sub 4]. Lead morphology varied from producer to producer, ranging from spherical particles to laminar structures.
