Facility for epithermal neutron activation analysis

Conference · · Trans. Am. Nucl. Soc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5051690
Epithermal neutron activation analysis (ENAA) has advantages over the usual thermal neutron activation analysis for elements that have a high resonance to thermal neutron cross-section ratio or for elements that can best be determined by reactions other than neutron/gamma-ray interactions. The advantage of epithermal activation is particularly marked in a matrix dominated by thermal neutron activations. Epithermal neutron activation facilities in which samples are encased in a thermal neutron filter, such as boron or cadmium, and activated in a reactor have been described by several authors. An ENAA facility at the University of Virginia Reactor has been used to analyze for iodine, silicon, nickel, and uranium. Detection capabilities and applications are discussed.
