Status report on the full-scale electric-heater tests at the Hanford Near-Surface Test Facility

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5051503
Purpose of the NSTF was to evaluate the thermomechanical response of basalt subjected to thermal loads, such as from high-level radioactive wastes in canisters. Prior to test startup, the response was modeled using DAMSWEL and a bilinear model. It was concluded that the response can be modeled satisfactorily on the canister or very near-field scale. The agreement for horizontal displacements is not as good as for vertical displacements. Rock temperature was > 400/sup 0/C at start of simulated cooldown, has been > 300/sup 0/C for 30 days. No appreciable boreholes decrepitation or thermal cracking has been observed. 23 figures. (DLC)
