Effect of high-temperature exposure on the structure of inertia-friction welds in RS/PM Al-8. 5Fe-1. 3V-1. 7Si

Aluminum alloy 8009 (formerly FVS0812) is a dispersion-strengthened Al-Fe-V-Si alloy produced by rapid solidification/powder metallurgy (RS/PM) processing. This relatively new family of high-performance alloys is based on hypereutectic Al-Fe compositions (8.5--12 wt.% Fe) with lesser ternary and quaternary additions of V and Si. Through RS/PM processing, a unique microstructure is obtained that consists of a high-volume fraction of nearly spherical, submicron Al[sub 13](Fe,V)[sub 3]Si (body-centered cubic) dispersoids in a fine-grained alpha aluminum matrix. The unique microstructural characteristics of these RS/PM alloys restricts the application and effectiveness of many conventional fusion welding processes for their joining, particularly if a high joint efficiency is required. Detailed analysis of the weld region revealed that extensive high-temperature plastic deformation at the center of the weld heat-and-deformation zone (HDZ) effectively homogenizes the heterogeneous base metal microstructure. The application of Al-Fe-V-Si alloys at high temperatures (i.e., >350 C) requires an understanding of thermal effects on the alloy microstructure and mechanical properties.
