As the nation`s fleet of coal fired power plants are aging, engineers and planners are beginning to study the options for the future. Technical, environmental and economic issues will influence these choices amid the confusing time of deregulation in the industry. This study looks at one of those options for a site-specific circulating PFBC repowering application of two 100 MW units where the existing coal infrastructure and steam turbine could be utilized and where stringent environmental controls need to be met. The results reveal no fatal flaws in this particular repowering application and the economics at $1,100/kW to $1,350/kW compare favorably with other solid fuel repowering options. Environmental regulations could easily be met.
