A High-Performance Power System (HIPPS) is being developed under the sponsorship of the US Department of Energy, Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC). This system is a coal-fired combined cycle that uses a High-Temperature Advanced Furnace (HITAF) to transfer much of the heat to the working fluids, air and steam. Systems of this type are capable of over 47 percent efficiency (HHV). The Foster Wheeler design uses a pyrolyzation process to convert the coal into fuel gas and char. Having these two fuels available allows the design of a totally coal fueled HIPPS with currently available materials. In Phase 1 of the project, a conceptual design of a 300 MW commercial plant was developed. Economic analysis of this plant relative to a PC boiler of equivalent size indicates that the HIPPS plant will have a 15% lower cost of electricity. Phase 2 of the project is now in progress. In this phase, the necessary R and D is being done to provide the design information for a prototype plant to be built in Phase 3. One area of the Phase 2 R and D is the pyrolyzer subsystem which includes: the generation of the fuel gas and char in the pyrolyzer, the separation of char from the fuel gas, and depressurization of the char. The state of technology in these areas is discussed along with information on the pilot plant testing that will be done to resolve design issues. Also included are test results from cold char depressurization tests with a Restricted Pipe Discharge System (RPDS). This type of a system is the preferred method of bringing the char from the pyrolyzer pressure of approximately 14 atmospheres (absolute) to char combustor pressure which is slightly above atmospheric.
