Title: Method for anchoring radioactive substances in a body resistant to leaching by water

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5045674

A method is described for containing high-level radioactive waste in a body resistant to leaching by water. The process includes steps for mixing the radioactive substances with a material which is resistant to leaching by water, or a material which when heated becomes resistant to leaching. Examples of such materials include insoluble salts or compounds of the radioactive substances such as titanates, silicates, zeolites, aluminium oxide, titanium oxide, quartz and rocks existing in nature. The mass is then to be enclosed in a capsule, evacuated, and subjected to isostatic pressing at a temperature and pressure required for the formation of a coherent mass. The capsule material should be matched to the resistant material so that it has a sufficiently high melting point for the capsule to fulfill its duties, and essentially the coefficient of thermal expansion in the cases when the capsule is left to provide a reinforced containment. The pressure during the isostatic pressing should be between 50 and 300 MPa. The temperature may vary from 700/sup 0/C to 1300/sup 0/C. 19 claims, 2 figures.
