After testing and modifications, a Monongehela Power Co. multi-cell fluidized-bed boiler promises to be the world's first generation. Design and operating specifications are described and preliminary performance test results are summarized for the boiler. The plant began operating in February, 1977, but was shut down during the coal strike to make changes in the fuel feeding system and to add an emission monitoring package. The boiler's advantages include stability, improved control, and a quick response to load swings. A full-load test period will continue until the fall in order to identify further areas for improvement. The Fluidized Combustion Co., a joint effort by the designers and builders of the boiler, will manufacture more units for industry and, ultimately, for utilities.
