Magnetopause of an accreting neutron star

Journal Article · · Sov. Astron. AJ (Engl. Transl.); (United States)

The shape of the Alfven surface separating the magnetosphere of a neutron star from the stream of accreting plasma and the velocity and scattering optical depth of the gas layer flowing along the Alfven surface are calculated. Calculations are made both for spherically symmetrical fall of the gas and for disk accretion. It is shown that the fall of matter from the Alfven radius to the surface of the neutron star is possible only with the condition of ''freezing'' of the plasma into the magnetic field of the star.
