A Houston toy factory cut its heating and cooling costs by 43% when it installed an earth-coupled, water-source heat pump system. The system consists of 11 5-ton heat pumps and 41 300-foot holes in the ground to hold closed-loop plumbing, which is plastic pipe guaranteed to last 75-100 years. The only exposed parts of the system are a few valves and the tops of the pumps that move the water through the plumbing. With escalating electricity prices, payback for the system should take only four years. The earth-coupled system replaces nine roof-mounted heater/air conditioners whose vibrations were exacerbating a roof leak problem.
