A program (IDCLASS) has been developed to generate rules for expert systems used in diagnosis-type problems. ID-CLASS combines the well-known ID-3 inductive algorithm{sup 1} and the OPS5 expert system language for efficiency and utilizes a strategy to minimize the number of rules. IDCLASS, written in FORTRAN77, performs an inductive learning task to create the knowledge base. Additionally, it creates on OPS5 source code as an expert system with runtime learning ability. IDCLASS requires no programming knowledge to use it, but the expert system created by IDCLASS requires an OPS5 compiler. A six-attribute system is considered in an example case study with a set of 13 training examples prepared by using the emergency response plan procedures of the Iowa State University UTR-10 reactor. It was found that IDCLASS is a useful tool for classification problems IDCLASS must be modified to include data monitoring, new rule verifying, and advice giving rules by using flexible features of the OPS5 language.
