Model for the ''atmosphere'' of stars around a massive black hole

A model is developed for a spherical system of N stars of equal mass m surrounding a black hole of mass M/sub h/>>mN. The consumption rate: the flux of stars of low angular momentum into the sphere of tidal disruption by the black hole: is calculated, allowing for repopulation of the loss cone by the stars due to diffusion of their orbits with respect to angular momentum. The corresponding distribution law for stars around the black hole is derived.
