High-temperature ashing of graphite samples using magnesium nitrate as an ashing aid followed by dissolution in a mixture of HCl and HNO/sub 3/ is found to be the preferred method of sample preparation. The use of the magnesium nitrate as the ashing agent does not affect the results of the experiments because the analytes are separated from the magnesium solution by the poly(dithiocarbamate) and poly(acrylamidoxime) resins. The use of these reagents enhances the capability of inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry method. The concentrations of the six elements investigated agree well with the manufacturer's certified concentrations. The use of electrothermal vaporization permits analyses with a smaller final solution volume than does nebulization. 4 tables.
