Title: Luminescence of rare-earth activated Gd/sub 2/GeO/sub 5/

Journal Article · · Mater. Res. Bull.; (United States)

The luminescence properties of Ln/sup 3+/-activated Gd/sub 2/GeO/sub 5/ are reported. The results show that the Ln/sup 3+/ ions are incorporated on both Gd/sup 3+/ sites in Gd/sub 2/GeO/sub 5/. The Gd/sup 3+/ ..-->.. Ln/sup 3+/ transfer probability increases in the sequence Sm/sup 3+/ less than or equal to Tb/sup 3+/ < Dy/sup 3+/ < defect center < Gd/sup 3+/ trap < Tb/sup 3+/ less than or equal to Dy/sup 3+/. The excitation of the emitting centers is mainly due to the trapping of holes. An observed broad-band emission with a maximum at 445 nm is ascribed to a lattice defect.
