Nuclear stability in the post-cold war era

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:5030657

Stability in the post-Cold War Soviet-American nuclear relationship will depend increasingly upon the phenomenon of force posture stability - that is, the balance in the routine state of generation and dispersal (or alert rate) of central strategic forces. This concept is examined using a synthesis of two existing game-theoretic techniques: Conflict analysis and the Theory of Moves. Specifically, variations of two theoretical two-player/three-strategy sequential games of complete information are analyzed, modeling, in the first instance, an offense-dominant force balance (the Offense Game) and, secondly, a mixed offense-defense world (the Strategic Defense Game).
