Striations in the discharge of an He--Cd laser and their influence on the emission characteristics

It is established experimentally that along with striations in the discharge of an He--Cd laser there are traveling oscillations caused by their sum and difference combinations, the development of which requires the presence of cadmium vapor in the discharge. The frequency regions of existence of these oscillations are found and their phase and group velocities are determined. It is shown that in a number of cases the influence of the dispersion properties of the medium leads to a pronounced change in the phase velocities of the sum and difference modes of striations. The influence of plasma oscillations of different frequencies on the output emission of the laser is analyzed.
