The Lower Member of the Vinini Formation in the Roberts Mountains of central Nevada consists of interbedded quartz arenite, quartz wacke, sandy limestone and conglomeratic turbidities, and siltstone and shale. These strata record the construction of a major submarine fan along the western margin of North America during the early Whiterockian in response to a major drop in relative sea level. Here the authors report evidence in support of the interpretation that the quartz sands were derived from the North American shelf and craton to the east of the basin. Many of the turbidites are calcareous and contain micrite and biomicrite clasts, Nuia, disarticulated ostracod valves, pelmatozoan plates, sponge spicules, Girvanella oncoids, and gramgented bryozoan and brachiopod bioclasts. These lithoclasts and bioclasts are identical to lithologies and fossils of the parted and ribbon-limestone facies and mudmound facies of the correlative, lower Antelope Valley Limestone that was deposited on the outer platform of the adjacent continental margin. A single brachiopod shell bed that is a concentration of brachiopod valves and trilobite fragments occurs high in the submarine fan facies. Although the specimens are poorly preserved, the genera Bathyurellus, Ingria, and Orthambonites have been identified. These genera are characteristic of the Orthidiella Zone (Zone L of Ross), which is the lowest zone of the Whiterockian and is restricted to the lower Antelope Valley Limestone in central Nevada.
