Angular distributions of I(/sup 2/P/sub 3/2/) scattered off Kr and Xe(/sup 1/S/sub 0/) in the thermal energy range have been measured in crossed molecular beams experiments. The interaction potentials for two relevant states (X 1/2 and I 3/2) for each of the systems are obtained by using an approximate elastic scattering analysis, which neglects nonadiabatic coupling, as previously done for other rare gas--halogen systems. The I--Xe (X 1/2) potential (epsilon-c = 0.69 kcal/mol, r/sub m/ = 4.30 A) and, to some extent, I--Kr (X 1/2) potential (epsilon-c = 0.55 kcal/mol, r/sub m/ = 4.05 A) shows a slightly more attractive interaction than the interaction potentials of Xe--Xe and Xe--Kr, but the I--Xe (I 3/2) potential (epsilon-c = 0.48 kcal/mol, r/sub m/ = 4.60 A) and the I--Kr (I 3/2) potential (epsilon-c = 0.36 kcal/mol, r/sub m/ = 4.32 A) present shallower epsilon-c's, a larger r/sub m/, and stronger repulsive walls than the corresponding rare gas pair potentials. The results obtained from this and previous investigations are reviewed.
