Devices and processes are disclosed for the treatment of waste gases, particularly automotive exhaust gases, to remove the oxides of nitrogen. Mixed noble metal catalysts consisting essentially of platinum or palladium and at least one other noble metal selected from the group consisting of ruthenium, rhodium, and iridium are employed in combination with layered oxide support coatings to eliminate ammonia formation during the removal process.
