Corrections to quantum-chromodynamic Born terms. I. Dilepton production and leptoproduction

Certain corrections of second order in the quantum-chromodynamic coupling ..cap alpha../sub s/ are studied for dilepton production and for leptoproduction. A problem of convention dependence is analyzed, and an explicit solution is presented. In terms of this it is found that at present dilepton masses M the O(..cap alpha../sub s/ /sup 2/) correction to the Drell-Yan formalism due to the subprocess q+q ..-->.. q+q+..gamma..* is small, but that it increases with M. Corresponding corrections to leptoproduction are found to be completely negligible, thus justifying the use of the solution.
