The physics of gravitational collapse - An overview

Conference · · Ann. N.Y. Acad. Sci.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5017419
The gravitational collapse of stars is discussed, assuming spherical symmetry and applying the technique of adiabatic hydrodynamics. Attention is given to the microphysics of collapse considering entropy, electron number, neutronization rate and nuclear statistical equilibrium. In addition, in order to investigate the neutrino astrophysics of collapse, the structure of an eight-solar-mass helium star is calculated from the initial instability until well after neutrino trapping the neutrino distribution function is shown for various shells. Also presented is the light curve from the core collapse and explosion of a low-mass (about 2.5 solar masses) helium star, which shows similarity to a type-I supernova.
